Video Logs (Vlogs)

SV Delos  -- Follow Brian and friends as they sail and dive the pacific on a 2000 Amel 54. We got back into boat ownership largely because of this volg. In addition to great videophotography, animation and production these years of video logs illustrate 'how to' in the key areas of boat ownership and live-aboard adventures.

White Spots Pirates (Casting off the lines) -- How one German girl (Nike) takes on solo sailboat ownership from a standing start in South America. Like the SV Delos vlogs these are interesting, informative and entertaining on several levels. It is a great story of someone realizing a challenging dream; the technical challenges and accomplishments are useful case studies in boat ownership, maintenance and renovation; and Nike is a good story teller who make the best of modern technology to produce a great vlog product. In the last week Nike has felt the need to apologise to followers for posting later than 'advertised.' It appears that some 'trolls' have taken exception to a few weeks delay in he posts. All I can say is that anyone who has sailed will know that demands on your time are great.  Sometimes it is fundamentals of survival or the preservation of your boat and equipment. On other occasions you have the opportunity to enjoy the fruits of your labour -- sun, sand, sunsets, and the rest. And perhaps editing vlogs and blogs becomes a chore that is easy to put off. Then there are wifi and other IT challenges. Any sailor will know that one of the main advantages and disadvantages of sailing is the ability to get away from it all. It is hard enough to get everything right in Europe or the US; consider living in a foreign land, on a meagre budget where the infrastructure is less developed, in a marine environment, where your laptop get cooked in 40C heat in salty air every day, and imagine how you would cope with a weekly schedule of high quality weblog or video log posts!

KeepTurningLeft -- A frugal sailing (Practical Boat Owner) journalist solo sails a Westerly Centaur (the classic British frugal yacht of the last 30 years) before sailing with friends to Scotland. I am puzzled about his blog title as his trip requires him to keep turning right!

JunkMing (and blog)-- Roger Taylor shows how you can take a very small boat and sail the World (all the World not just the easy bits). Mingming II survived her sea trails with flying colours last summer. When I last looked (a slightly tired after 10s of thousands of miles) Mingming was for sail. If Roger had left the wind vane steering in place, I may have been temped (beyond common sense) to buy her -- a junk-rigged Corribee 21, similar to the boat (albeit with a different rig and bespoke design philosophy for ocean voaging) to that which the then young Ellen Macarthur completed her British circumnavigation on the way to sailing stardom.

Pauli Juppi has recently started out on his escapism adventure, buying a boat to sail way. He is certainty innovative and ambitious, a born entertainer. His first video is 'nordic' to say the least. He demonstrates his robust constitution and determination. Once again, not only does he express enviable ideas, but the quality of his production matches their quality. We will watch his progress with interest.

Web Logs (Blogs)

Sailing Blogs -- blog nation has a great compilation of sailing blogs. We read a number of these (some listed below) before we found the site, but are sure that there are other great blogs to be found on this site.

Turf to Surf -- We started reading this blog owing to Tasha's practical experience and advice on sailing with cats (a theme that you will see in this list of links). Tasha and her husband Ryan show how self-employment and live-aboard sailing can be successfully combined.

SailingSimplicity (facebook, vlog and website) -- Teresa Carey, a young sailor and writer is a great advocate of sailing and live-aboard culture. And she has a cat (Dory) on board (her Nor'sea 27). In 2001 she delivered a TEDx talk on the topic. The material is unlikely to be a revelation to your average sailor, but middle America (and perhaps middle England) seemed impressed. Perhaps others will be inspired to take on a more simple life afloat.
